Government's role in the economy

Over the last 10 years our nation has had a huge economic problem. Ever since 9-11 we have struggled to thrive. We handled that situation about as poorly as is possible, and far worse than any situation has been handled in the history of the world. Many people no longer like George W. Bush's predecessor because of extracurricular activities, but they all seem to forget what our economy was like before he was replaced. Our economy was booming and we had no national debt. We, in order to thrive, need to increase taxes and use that money effectively, we need to pay off debts and learn when and how to go to war. I assume that we have learned that tax cuts during war(even if they won't officially call it that) is an awful idea. When voting people need to learn to vote for what is best, not who is most like them. With George W. Bush it is clear that a majority of people did the latter and in effect cost this nation trillions of dollars. We need to follow Bill Clinton's economic plan from the 1990s.

Racism in America

Our Country has always had a racism problem, looking back we are all able to acknowledge everything that was done to discriminate against people because of color is wrong. We were able to slowly take strides forward and now there is much less harm done to people because of their race. However while I fail to see much discrimination in today's world it seems that most African-Americans seem to feel discriminated against. DuBois was a huge help in the many civil rights steps that happened in the early twentieth century. He helped to make more steps on a large scale to help African-Americans, but he did not perfect our racism problem.

HeLa

This was in essence a book about ethics. It made me think about what I believe. At some points in this book I was offended by Skloot’s writing, seemingly trying to portray her own ethics through a sad story. As far as I am concerned, the doctors who took the cells from her did a good thing, because it was for the good of most people who were currently living and even more people who were still yet to be a part of this world. I believe that the most important ethic or rule to follow is doing the most possible good no matter what. If you try to make the world a better place, you just might. I realize that people could have a problem if Henrietta was hurt in order to help all of these people, however this is an invalid argument because in not taking her cells, the doctors would have prevented (or at least slow the pace of) many medical advancements that saved lives and helped others suffer less. In effect by not taking her cells, the doctors would have hurt many, many people. Skloot offended me with her emphasis on money for Henrietta’s family. They did nothing and deserve nothing for that. I feel sorry for the family, but only because Henrietta died, not because success came from something that she didn’t even know happened.

Bic Advertisement

Many advertisements are boring and annoying but this one caught my eye and is actually very interesting. This advertisement is a 3d advertisement in the United Kingdom. It is an advertisement for Bic razors and is very creative. The advertisement is saying different things: it shows that Bic’s razors are good enough to cut grass; the advertisement is definitely hoping that people buy into the idea that bigger is better. This advertisement has elements of Pathos, Logos, and Ethos in it. The Ethos is in leaving the billboard blank, sort of suggesting that everyone knows about Bic and they are only reminding the viewer of Bic. The Logos is in saying that if the razor is good enough to cut grass then it is certainly good enough to cut hair. And finally, the Pathos is in startling the viewer with so many non-traditional advertising styles (blank billboard, grass, 3d). This advertisement is very effective because of the attention that it attracts. I would be more likely to buy Bic products having seen this advertisement.
